The FIA Formula One World Championship, popularly known simply as Formula One or F1, is the most famous auto racing competition in the world. Comprising of single seater cars, the races are held across the world at circuits and public roads designed specifically for the competition. The Formula in the name is the set of guidelines that the drivers and constructors have to stick to. The championship is contested over a season which includes a series of races. Each race is called a Grand Prix and the results of the races are used to decide the winners of the championship. There is a drivers’ championship and a constructors’ championship on offer to the winners. Formula One enjoys a universal following, being the motorsport with the largest fan base.
The European Grand Prix Racing, held in the 1920s and 30s was the forerunner to Formula One. Following the Second World War, the formula was devised for holding the races. Initially, the races were non-championship. The first championship race was held in England in 1950. In those days, only the drivers competed for the trophy. The constructors’ championship was introduced in 1958. Since then, the competition has followed the same format with drivers and constructors competing for the championships.
The Formula One cars are specially designed for the races. Most of them are dismantled following the race. The cars are among the fastest in the world. As far as racing goes, the F1 cars are by far the fastest, capable of achieving speeds in excess of 220 mph. There is a restriction on the RPM for these cars with the limit being 18,000. The cars make heavy use of electronics to achieve the high performance. The racers have to communicate with the pit crew and the information displayed in front of them. The main components of the cars, including the suspension and tyres are also carefully developed to ensure performance as well as safety.
A Formula One event is known as a Grand Prix. Held on tracks and circuits across the world, each Grand Prix spans a weekend. On Friday, the drivers are allowed two practice sessions. The exception is made when the race is held in Monaco, where the practice is done on Thursday. Sometimes, teams let their additional drivers do a practice round, usually at the expense of the driver who has to drive in the race.
The qualifying round is held on Saturday. The qualifying process for a Grand Prix is simple. The drivers have to complete the lap as quickly as possible. The 24 grid positions are assigned to drivers going from the fastest first to the slowest last. Technically, the drivers have to complete the lap within 107% of the time taken by the driver with the fastest lap. The 107% rule has been reinstated for the 2011 season and may be used regularly in the future.
The race is held on a Sunday. A warm-up lap is allowed. The cars then line up according to their grid positions. The top 10 cars to finish the race are awarded points, with the winner getting 25 points. To qualify for points, a car has to complete 90% of the winner’s distance. The points are halved if less than 75% of the race was completed.
